The northern terminus of the Kentucky Trail intersects the Sheltowee Trace on Wilson Ridge (above Yamacraw Bridge) in the Big South Fork. The bridge that crosses the Big South Fork river connecting Blue Heron with the trail was once a mining railcar bridge. Other evidence of former coal mining is abundant, such as capped portals and ruins of unknown structures. Despite this industrial past, the park offers one of few places that hikers can find lush green in a dead Kentucky winter.
