We found the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison hosts a set of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aos.wisc.edu\/weather\/wx_obs\/GOES16.html\">imagery<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0The satellite will become fully online in November and undoubtedly many other data sources will be available.<\/p>\n<p>This weather satellite captures 16 spectral bands with time resolutions as quick as every 30 seconds. The spatial resolution (the size of each pixel) is between 0.5 km and 2 km and the visible grayscale image for the continental US is 12,000 x 9,000 pixels and is collected every 5 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>We wrote a series of <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/boydx\/outrageGIS-weather-stations\">crontab jobs <\/a>to automate the processing of weather imagery to display on our website.<\/p>\n<h3>Real-time satellite image maps<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>We have the current satellite image with our parks dropped on the map for reference:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.outragegis.com\/weather\/goes16\/current.jpg\">outragegis.com\/weather\/goes16\/current.jpg<br \/>\n<\/a>(1,900 px x 1,932 px, ~900k)<\/li>\n<li>Here is the recent two-hour time-lapse image:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.outragegis.com\/weather\/goes16\/animation.gif\">outragegis.com\/weather\/goes16\/animation.gif<\/a><br \/>\n(1,900 px x 1,932 px, ~40 MB)<\/li>\n<li>Starting on September 4, we&#8217;ll create day-long time-lapse animations:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.outragegis.com\/weather\/goes16\/yesterday.gif\">outragegis.com\/weather\/goes16\/yesterday.gif<\/a><br \/>\n(1,900 px x 1,932 px, ~350 MB)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Though\u00c2\u00a0GOES-16\u00c2\u00a0is not officially operational, the availability of imagery has steadily increased.
