(280695) Evening glow from sunset illuminated clouds
Days of rain and cool temperatures help sustain low clouds in the Smokies. In this evening photograph, the higher sunlit clouds create a soft glow on the lowest clouds hugging the mountain sides.

Cold Mountain is in the Balsam Mtn range SE of the GRSM and is over 5K feet. Climate textbooks often explain that climbing mountains here is comparable to moving hundreds of miles to the north. This is not entirely correct, since the sun is always higher in the sky here compared to latitudes closer to the poles. There's a more rapid heating and cooling condition here and you can almost watch leaf-out line climb up the mountain.
