A late spring hike from Cedar Cliffs to Furnace Arch on the Sheltowee Trace. Just as the mountain laurels have just lost their blooms, summer awaits in the freshly mowed Clear Creek Furnace picnic area. Trees are now in full leaf out and shade the karst feature, The Sinks, near the ridge above the picnic grounds, about 1 mile south. Near the arch sandstone boulders and exposed caprock greet the southward hiking pilgrims and introduce them to the geology of the Red River area.

First heard spring peepers this season here and enjoyed the soaring buzzards below me.
Sept 30 - Oct 1: Hensley Settlement, Cumberland Gap NHP
Wilderness Road Campground, Gibson Gap, Butcher Gap, Hensley Camp, Hensley Settlement, Indian Rock, Ridge Trail, and Lewis Hollow.An overnight trip from Wilderness Road Campground, Gibson Gap, Butcher Gap, Hensley Camp. Next day was Hensley Settlement, Indian Rock, Ridge Trail, and Lewis Hollow. Apples in the old Hensley orchard were fantastic. Fruits not big and symmetric like store bought apples, but immensely more flavorful. Every bite is like tasting all the apples in the world...maybe I was just hungry.
